The AAMLO Reference Library is a unique non-circulating collection serving researchers, students, educators, genealogists, and anyone interested in African American history and culture.

With approximately 16,000 volumes by or about African Americans, the collection offers a rich resource for learning, discovery, and research.

A special children's collection features award-winning titles, while researchers can explore resources such as

Blacks in Selected Newspapers, Censuses and Other Sources by James de T. Abajian.

One notable addition to the collection is the eight-volume African American National Biography, containing more than 4,000 entries written by distinguished scholars and edited by Henry Louis Gates.

Library staff are available to assist with research questions, collection navigation, and general browsing.

Available Computers for Patrons

The Reference Library provides seven computers, including:

  • Six public-use computers
  • One dedicated scanning workstation
  • One catalog computer

Researchers utilizing archival collections also have access to four additional computers within the Archives Department.

Seed Lending Library

AAMLO is also home to a free Seed Lending Library. Anyone is welcome to borrow seeds—no library card is required.

Visitors simply sign out the seeds they wish to grow and are encouraged to save and return seeds from their harvest for future gardeners to enjoy.
